ProtonVPN
Swiss-based VPN with free tier, no logs, and AI Stealth protocol.
About this Tool
ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service built by Proton AG, the Swiss company behind ProtonMail. It routes internet traffic through encrypted tunnels to protect user privacy, block trackers, and bypass geographic restrictions. ProtonVPN stands out in the productivity-AI category for its AI-driven Stealth protocol, which uses machine learning to disguise VPN traffic and evade deep packet inspection. The service suits remote workers, privacy-conscious professionals, and anyone who needs secure access to tools and data across networks they do not control.
How ProtonVPN works
After installing the app on desktop or mobile, users connect to one of Proton’s servers spread across dozens of countries. All traffic between the device and the VPN server is encrypted, preventing internet providers, network administrators, and attackers on public Wi-Fi from reading or logging activity.
The AI Stealth protocol is the newer addition. It analyzes network conditions and applies obfuscation techniques to make VPN traffic look like ordinary HTTPS browsing. This is especially useful in environments where VPN connections are throttled or blocked outright, such as restrictive corporate networks or countries with heavy internet censorship.
NetShield, Proton’s built-in ad and tracker blocker, operates at the DNS level. When enabled, it filters out known advertising domains, malware sources, and tracking scripts before they reach the browser. This reduces page load times and limits the data that third parties can collect during a browsing session.
Secure Core is a multi-hop feature that routes traffic through hardened servers in privacy-friendly jurisdictions (Switzerland, Iceland, Sweden) before exiting to the destination. This adds a second layer of protection so that even if an exit server were compromised, the user’s real IP address would remain hidden.
Strengths
- Genuine free tier. ProtonVPN offers an unlimited-data free plan with access to servers in several countries. Unlike many competitors, the free plan has no bandwidth cap and no time limit.
- Audited no-log policy. Proton AG is headquartered in Switzerland, which has strong privacy laws and sits outside the Five Eyes and Fourteen Eyes surveillance alliances. The no-log policy has been independently audited.
- Stealth protocol. The AI-powered obfuscation makes it one of the more reliable VPNs for use on restricted networks where standard VPN protocols get detected and blocked.
- NetShield ad blocking. Filtering ads and trackers at the network level means protection extends to all apps on the device, not just the browser.
- Open source. All ProtonVPN client apps are open source and have undergone independent security audits, which adds transparency uncommon in the VPN industry.
Limitations
- Free tier is limited in speed and server selection. Free users are restricted to servers in a handful of countries, and connection speeds are noticeably slower than on the paid plan during peak hours.
- No split tunneling on all platforms. Split tunneling, which lets users route only certain apps through the VPN, is not available on every operating system. macOS support, for instance, has lagged behind Windows and Android.
- Secure Core adds latency. Because traffic passes through two servers instead of one, Secure Core connections carry a measurable speed penalty. This makes it less practical for video calls or large file transfers where low latency matters.
- No dedicated IP option. Some competing VPN services offer static dedicated IPs, which are useful for accessing IP-whitelisted business systems. ProtonVPN does not currently provide this.
Who it is for
ProtonVPN fits best for remote workers and freelancers who connect through coffee shop Wi-Fi, coworking spaces, or hotel networks and need confidence that their traffic is private. It is also a strong choice for users in regions with internet restrictions who rely on the Stealth protocol to maintain access. The free tier makes it accessible to students and budget-conscious users who want baseline privacy protection without a subscription commitment. Teams already using ProtonMail or Proton Drive will find the integrated ecosystem convenient, since a single Proton account covers all services.
How it compares
ProtonVPN occupies a different niche than most tools in the productivity-AI directory, but it complements them. A writing assistant like Grammarly processes text through cloud servers, which means the data you send is only as secure as your network connection. Running ProtonVPN alongside cloud-based productivity tools adds a layer of transport security that the tools themselves do not provide. Similarly, task managers such as Todoist sync data across devices over the internet. Using a VPN ensures that sync traffic on untrusted networks stays encrypted end to end. Where Grammarly and Todoist improve what you produce, ProtonVPN protects the connection through which that work travels.
