Fathom is a free AI meeting assistant built for Zoom that automatically records, transcribes, and summarizes calls as they happen. It is made by Fathom Video Inc. and is aimed at anyone who spends significant time in video meetings and wants to spend less time taking notes or chasing down action items afterward. How Fathom works

Fathom joins your Zoom calls as a bot participant and begins recording and transcribing in real time. During the meeting you can bookmark key moments with a single click, and Fathom flags those segments as smart highlights in your recap. Once the call ends, Fathom generates an AI meeting summary and makes the full transcript searchable. On the paid Team plan it can also push call notes and summaries directly into connected CRM platforms, reducing the manual data entry that typically follows a sales or client call.

Strengths

• Genuinely free tier. The core product, AI recording, automatic transcription, summaries, and smart highlights, costs nothing. Most competing tools gate transcription or summaries behind a paywall.
• Low friction to start. Setup requires only a Zoom account and the Fathom browser extension. There is no lengthy onboarding and no credit card required for the free plan.

Limitations

• Bot participant in the call. Fathom joins as a visible bot, which some clients or external participants find distracting or raise questions about. Consent and recording disclosure must be managed by the host.
• CRM integrations require the paid plan. The free tier does not include CRM auto-logging, so revenue teams that need that workflow have to upgrade.
